Learning the Hard Way, Vol. 39 No. 1

I sat in the car a spell, trying to puzzle out this sign by the side of the road in Germantown (NY). Finally, I cracked the code:

• B|E|Ch = Bacon Egg and Cheese
• S|E|Ch = Sausage Egg and Cheese
• H|E|Ch = Ham Egg and Cheese
• H/R = Hard Roll

Evidently this code must be readily apparent to regular consumers of so-called "breakfast sandwiches." Maybe if this cryptic signage appeared somewhere other than in front of an Indian restaurant, it might not have taken me so long...

In the American Heartland, "vegetable soup" evidently means "beef stew with three frozen peas and two carrot cubes."
