A modest proposal: Marketize marriage
Here's a radical solution to the issue of gay marriage (and also the problem of endemic straight divorce) that even Republicans might embrace: Marketize marriage.
Take someone like the editor of this publicaton, who is in a long-term heterosexual relationship -- but who has no interest in getting married. (If the relationship needs a piece of paper to survive, it's probably doomed anyway.) Why shouldn't that person be allowed to sell their right to marry?
We can end this controversy by allowing such people to "trade" that right on an open market. Anyone who is either divorced and wants to remarry, or who wants a gay marriage instead of a civil union, can buy that right -- which the seller then forfeits...
